Best Time to Buy Winter Tires in Ontario
Every fall, drivers in Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph ask the same question: when should I buy winter tires, and when should I put them on? Waiting for the first snowstorm is the common answer, and it's usually the wrong one. Here's how to time it so you're ready before the roads get nasty.
The 7°C rule
Transport Canada is clear: at temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity and traction. Winter tires keep their flexibility and grip at much lower temperatures. The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) gives the same advice: change over as soon as the temperature consistently dips below 7°C, including for cold, dry pavement, not only for snow and ice.
In southern Ontario that often means late October or early November, but overnight lows can cross that line earlier. Don't wait for the calendar date. Watch the forecast.
Buy early, install when it's cold
Buying and installing aren't the same decision. Buying early means you still have a full selection of sizes and brands. Once the first real cold snap hits, shops get busy and popular sizes sell out. Installing later means you put the tires on when the rubber will actually help: once daytime highs and overnight lows are regularly near or below 7°C.
A practical plan for Cambridge-area drivers:
Shop and reserve your winter tires in early to mid-fall, while inventory is wide open.
Book your install for when overnight lows are consistently below 7°C, ideally before the first snowfall.
If you already own a winter set, book a seasonal swap on the same timeline.
Ontario's own winter driving page notes that winter tires improve traction in frost, snow and ice and can shorten braking distances by as much as 25%. That benefit only helps if the tires are on the vehicle.
What counts as a winter tire
Look for the peaked mountain with snowflake symbol on the sidewall. Transport Canada and Ontario both say tires with that mark meet a snow traction performance standard designed for severe snow. All-season tires are not the same as winter tires, and Ontario notes they can start to lose grip at 7°C.
For more on that marking, see our post on the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol.
Install a matching set of four
Transport Canada and Ontario both say to install winter tires in sets of four and never mix different types of tires on one vehicle. Matching type, size, speed rating and load index keeps handling predictable. TRAC warns that putting winter tires on only the front or only the rear can cause oversteer or understeer.
Also check tread depth. Transport Canada advises against using tires worn close to 4 mm (5/32") on snow-covered roads. Our guide to winter tire tread depth shows how to check.
A side benefit: the insurance discount
Ontario requires auto insurers to offer a discount for vehicles equipped with winter tires. The amount and the paperwork vary by company, so ask your insurer. We covered the details in Ontario's winter tire insurance discount.
