When to Put Your Winter Tires On

Timing plays a big role in getting the most out of your winter tires. A good rule of thumb is to install them once temperatures consistently fall below 7°C. Even high-quality all-season tires start to lose effectiveness below that temperature, while winter tires use softer rubber compounds that stay flexible in the cold and grip better on snow and ice.

Many drivers wait until the first snowfall to act, but by then options can be limited and the risks are higher. Getting your swap done early means you're prepared when the weather turns.

Switching Back in the Spring

It's just as important to switch back to your all-season or summer tires once temperatures rise again. Using winter tires all year isn't ideal, because warmer conditions can make them wear down faster and reduce their performance.

Running two separate sets also reduces wear on both, which helps each set last longer. With proper care, winter tires can typically last 3 to 5 winter seasons, depending on how and how much you drive. When your off-season set comes off, store it in a cool, dry place to help it last.
